The Tourism Enhancement Fund has asked the HEART NSTA Trust to develop a Job Readiness programme specifically for new entrants to the tourism sector. Successful candidates will receive an NCTVET Certificate.

The training is geared and providing an orientation/ employability skills training to persons entering the industry. The programme will introduce participants to the fundamental topics of Professionalism, Culture, Health and Safety and Industry Knowledge. Specifically, the programme will include seven (7) units as follows:

  • Develop and update hospitality industry knowledge
  • Provide effective hospitality service to customers
  • Work with colleagues and customers
  • Develop and maintain professionalism
  • Operate in a culturally diverse work environment
  • Comply with health, safety and security procedures
  • Deliver quality customer service
Duration 18 hours: 16 hr sessions / 2 hrs assessments, over 2 & a half days

Modality:

face to face at HEART NSTA Trust institutions, to include facilities in Port Maria, Beachamville, HCHS, Falmouth, Culloden, Kenilworth, Petersfield, Granville, Seaford Town.

INTERNATIONALLY BENCHMARKED CERTIFICATION:

All candidates will be invited to participate in one of the following courses:

  • Customer Service Gold Professional (CSGP)
  • ServSafe

Both these courses are offered by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) and attract an international certificate. In addition, with a little extra effort, the CSGP attracts a second certificate from NCTVET.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW EMPLOYERS:

It is proposed that TEF/JCTI host a job fair at each site at the conclusion of the training and certification so that local hoteliers can meet these candidates and identify prospects for jobs or internships. This way the hoteliers would have options, only committing to a short-term opportunity.

This we thought was a critical step as training people and sending them back home without any change in their situation was provably useless.

COST: There is no cost to the candidate seeking certification, nor to the hotelier for choosing from among the certified candidates.
