Bartlett Says Better Labour Market Arrangements Negotiated For Tourism Workers

Minister of Tourism

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says he has negotiated better labour market arrangements for workers in the tourist sector.

The negotiation took place with key representatives from Inverotel and senior tourism officials on the margins of FITUR, the leading tourism trade fair held in Spain.

Inverotel is one of the largest Spanish hotel investment groups.

Mr. Bartlett says the discussion focused on a comprehensive plan that will address housing accessibility, professional development through training, and retirement security.

“The essence of the discussion revolves around human capital development strategies, particularly around the labour market arrangements, and the commitment to enable a better environment and a better ecosystem for the workers of the industry. The decision to enable a full payment of gratuity to all the workers was emphasized and accepted. The decision to train, upscale and indeed to professionalise the industry was also accepted,” he noted.

The Tourism Minister said a commitment was given to work closer with the Jamaica Centre for Tourism Innovation, to ensure the expanded programme of certifying competent workers and also to build out the programme with the Ministry of Education to provide certification for Grades 11 to 13 students in the high school system.
